Xavier’s Alumni Conduct “Ripples of Hope” Philanthropy Initiative for Dhapa’s Sweeper Community
Kolkata, March 15, 2026: The St. Xavier’s College (Calcutta) Alumni Association (SXCCAA) organized the 8th edition of its monthly outreach programme, “Ripples of Hope – Small Acts, Endless Impacts,” today at Hathgachhia Free Primary School in the Dhapa area of Kolkata, with the support of Tanuj Vocational Training Society.
The initiative focused on supporting an NGO-run school that provides education to over 110 children from the sweeper community, one of the most marginalized sections of society. Alongside educational support for the children, the programme also highlighted a skill development initiative for more than 80 mothers, many of whom work as domestic helpers. Through stitching and vocational training, the programme aims to help them develop a sustainable secondary income and move towards financial independence.
During the event, members of SXCCAA spent time interacting with the children and their families, reinforcing the spirit of community engagement and empathy. Educational kits and stationery were distributed to the students, while essential household items and food supplies were provided to the families. Goody bags were also shared with the children, celebrating the joy of giving.
Rev. Dr. Dominic Savio, SJ, Principal of St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata and President of SXCCAA, attended the programme as Chief Guest. Speaking on the occasion, he said:
“Service to the marginalized is central to the Jesuit mission. Through initiatives like Ripples of Hope, we reaffirm our commitment to stand with communities that need support the most. By empowering children through education and enabling their mothers with livelihood skills, we are nurturing dignity, hope, and a better future.”
Several Jesuit Fathers and members of the alumni community were also present at the programme and actively participated in interacting with the children and families.
Mr. Sanjib Koner, Honorary Secretary of SXCCAA, emphasized that “Ripples of Hope is designed as a sustained engagement programme rather than a one-time act of charity, ensuring continued support and mentorship for underprivileged communities.”
“Ripples of Hope” is the signature monthly outreach initiative of SXCCAA, aimed at creating lasting social impact through compassion, partnership, and continued community engagement.
